, connecticut, released recordings of 911 calls made nearly a year ago. these calls reveal realtime reactions when a shooter walked into sandy hook elementary school and killed 21 first graders and six adults. nbc's jay gray has more. >> reporter: the 911 operators were steady and focused as callers described what was going on. a teacher pleading tr help saying somebody's got a gun. i caught a glimpse of somebody running down the hallway still shooting. school custodian described the shattered front window. during the call gun shots rang out in the background. he tells the operator, quote, i keep hearing shooting, i keep hearing popping. then he describes hearing only silence. following the wishes of survivors and family members of the victims, many who fought for nearly a year to block the release of the recordings, nbc will not air the calls. nicole hockley's son died in the attack. she talked with nbc's andrea mitchell this week. >> we don't feel the 911 calls should have been released, but that decision has been made now, and it will affect our community certainly and it will affect our f

phone was used. is that basically -- they are not tracking us overseas in realtime when we use our cell phones? >> the term "tracking" used to describe is something of a misnomer, it's not realtime. it's storing the record of where the cell phone was when the call was made. as you say, this was outside united states. the nsa does this the capability to gather data inside but it has not, chosen not to do it but it does track it outside the u.s. it's part of what is in the database of phone calls. go back and try to reconstruct where someone was or try to develop relationships, see who was in a certain place where maybe something bad happened, who was around a person the time the call was made, that data. they say it's valuable to gather information on suspected terror cells overseas. as you know it has caused concerns here and overseas that it's a violation of privacy. >> we also learned about stolen credentials and how stupid people can be about their passwords. tell us about that. >> well, i frankly thought that was the most interesting part of this story. if you look at the numbers it

it again, light post, it goes down. that is realtime there. again, the edited, that smoke, that edit leaves out a 60-second gap there. if we see the 60 seconds, we see horror below those hedges because those men obviously would have been trying to get out, and nobody was there outside to help them. it wasn't until the flames were rising and the smoke was above those hedges that you're looking at now, about two minutes later, that anyone arrived with a fire extinguisher or to try to help them. we've heard of heroic efforts to try to pull the men out because it was too late. the friends were at a charity event at rodas' car shop when they heard the krocrash. it was a couple, three minutes by the time they got there. by the time they got there, that's what the smoke looked like right there. it's the lonely 60 seconds of no smoke, no fire in the porsche carrera gt when those men were inside that vehicle obviously unable to get out. we'll hear this afternoon from the coroner. we'll hear this afternoon from the coroner. sorry, i was going to tell you we'll get preliminary autopsy results perhaps
